U.S. 50% tariffs: the list of Canadian goods changes today
Some cheeses and furniture enter the scope, while cement and road salt leave it. Import bans announced for September 29 follow a separate timetable.

The scope of U.S. 50% duties on selected Canadian products changes this Tuesday, September 15. AFP reports that cheeses, motorboats and certain furniture are being added. Cement, road salt and some paper products are being removed. This is not a uniform duty on every Canadian export. [1]
A defined scope
The Federal Register proclamation takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time. It covers affected goods entered for U.S. consumption or withdrawn from warehouses for that purpose. The product’s customs description and transaction date therefore determine its application. [3]
The White House invokes Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 and presents the measures as a response to Canadian retaliation. That is the U.S. administration’s stated rationale. Its fact sheet says the duties can affect USMCA-qualifying goods and apply alongside sector-specific tariffs. [2]
Two separate dates
Import bans announced for selected dairy products and alcoholic beverages are due to begin September 29. Combining the two dates would misrepresent which restrictions already apply. [2]
Exemption from this instrument does not necessarily mean exemption from every other trade measure. The text and annexes establish its scope. Retail-price effects cannot be inferred from the announced rate alone. [3]
