Churchill Falls oversight takes centre stage on the final debate day
Tony Wakeham is preparing a new oversight mechanism. Opposition leaders question its independence ahead of the vote expected Thursday evening.

Tony Wakeham is preparing oversight for the next stage of Churchill Falls negotiations, VOCM reports Thursday. The Newfoundland and Labrador premier says former committee members have agreed to continue under a new arrangement. [1]
Parliamentary scrutiny and negotiations
VOCM reports objections from John Hogan and Jim Dinn: Hogan calls for testing decisions against independent views, while Dinn criticizes oversight focused too heavily on process. These are their positions, not audit findings. [1]
The framework presented by the government on September 10 provides for a special sitting on the cooperation and implementation agreement concerning Churchill Falls and Gull Island, as well as federal commitments. It organizes questions to experts and members’ speeches before the vote. [2]
NTV had already reported opposition calls for independent oversight on Wednesday. The disagreement therefore also concerns how to assess assumptions and decisions surrounding a long-term agreement. [4]
A result still to come
VOCM reports that the vote is expected Thursday evening, after closing speeches and Question Period. Its result is not yet available as this edition is prepared. A scheduled vote does not establish that the agreement has been approved. [3]
Further coverage will need to distinguish the parliamentary vote, the new mechanism’s mandate and definitive agreements emerging from negotiations. These are separate stages in assessing the political decision and oversight of its implementation. [2]
