New file: CMS and the Associated Press establish the announcement and process concerns.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says it canceled about 315,000 Affordable Care Act marketplace enrollments covering more than 760,000 people on Aug. 31 after confirming they were unauthorized. [1]

The Associated Press reports that the administration describes the operation as an anti-fraud effort and estimates $2.2 billion in savings from canceled subsidy payments. CMS says another 419,000 enrollments will undergo additional verification. [2]

The administration also announced a six-month suspension for new agents or brokers who enroll people in the plans. Experts cited by AP say fraud exists but are seeking more transparency about the criteria used. [2]

The published figures establish the scale of the announced operation, not how many eligible people would ultimately lose coverage. The outcome will depend on the verifications and further details about the cancellations. [1]
