Pacific Link: Ottawa designates pipeline a project of national interest

The October 1 announcement opens another stage; project conditions remain to be set.

Carried forward 2026-10-06. October 1 designation retained; it does not mean the pipeline has been built.

Ottawa listed the Pacific Link oil pipeline as a project of national interest on October 1. The government aims to finalize federal conditions by September 1, 2027. [1]

A Pacific outlet

CHCH corroborates Mark Carney’s announcement in Fort McMurray. The project would connect Alberta to British Columbia’s coast. [2]

Ottawa’s stated goal is to export an additional one million barrels a day to Asia. This is future capacity, not oil already being shipped. [1]

Indigenous opposition

The Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs, or UBCIC, rejects the designation and says consultation was inadequate. It emphasizes First Nations’ rights and risks to waters and territories. [3]

The next step

That opposition is not a court ruling. The announced federal process still has to establish project conditions and continue consultations. [1]
