Mark Carney announced a CAD 2 billion investment in home energy retrofits on October 8. The new heat pump programme aims to reach up to 820,000 households, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. [1]

Eligibility conditions

The federal backgrounder provides up to CAD 10,000 for households below the median income and CAD 2,000 for other eligible homeowners. Equipment must appear on an eligible products list; only one rebate will be issued per person. [2]

A launch still ahead

The Canadian Press reports a planned launch in early 2027, retroactive to autumn 2026. Full details have not been finalized: the announcement therefore does not mean applications are already open. [3]

Savings will vary

The agency also reports that federal officials do not promise savings for every household. In some provinces where natural gas is cheaper, switching to a heat pump could increase heating bills. [3]
