October 25 preliminary count updated; party leadership issue added.

CityNews projects a Conservative majority following the October 24 election. Lorne Doerkson is expected to become premier; the projection does not mean he has taken office. [2]

The preliminary count

In Elections BC’s update displaying a timestamp of October 25 at 5:04 p.m., Conservatives lead in 63 districts, the NDP in 28 and the Greens in two. The agency says 99.96% of ballot boxes have reported. [1]

Counting still to come

Elections BC schedules the final count for November 6. Some ballots, including mail ballots, remain to be counted; the displayed leads are not certified results. [1]

The NDP’s response

According to CityNews, David Eby announced his resignation as NDP leader in his concession speech. The party is set to move into opposition. [2]

The party leadership

The Canadian Press reports that party rules bar an interim leader from seeking the permanent leadership. The party board wants Doerkson to remain leader; changing the rules requires support from two-thirds of members. This internal process is separate from forming a government. [3]
