New report dated November 5 on data released November 4.

U.S. private employers added 86,000 jobs in October, according to ADP’s November 4 report. September’s figure was revised from 90,000 to 86,000. [1]

Differences across sectors

Services accounted for 82,000 additional jobs, compared with 4,000 in goods-producing activities. Professional and business services nevertheless lost 27,000 positions. [1]

The relevant comparison

Reuters confirms the total and revision. Its economist survey expected 69,000 jobs; that is a forecast, separate from the observed result and the previous month’s figure. [2]

Two different reports

Yahoo Finance notes that this measure covers private employers. The federal report due November 6 also covers public employers. ADP’s figure therefore does not establish the outcome of the forthcoming government report. [3]
