Ottawa announced talks on a First Nations sovereign wealth fund on October 26; its design remains to be determined with their leaders. [1]

The announced funding

The government announced more than C$2.5 billion over five years for emergency preparedness and more than C$630 million over four years for First Nations and Inuit policing. [1]

A critical response

The Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs considers the meeting inadequate. It says the emphasis on major projects continues to overshadow recognition of First Nations title, rights and jurisdiction. [2]
