Evening update: four deaths are now confirmed by the state; the morning version reflected the tally then available. The article’s address is preserved.

Pennsylvania confirmed two additional measles-associated deaths on Tuesday, bringing its 2026 total to four. The two unvaccinated people lived in Jefferson and Mifflin counties. The health department says the deaths will be added to its dashboard on Wednesday. [4]

Deaths reported locally

The Associated Press reports that the Mifflin death involved an 18-year-old. It also notes the death of a 40-year-old woman in Jefferson and those of two infants in Lancaster in August. [5]

Why the morning tally was different

On September 14, CIDRAP still distinguished the Jefferson coroner’s announcement from the state’s ongoing review. This explains why our morning edition described a reported death still under review. An older source can document this chronology without providing the latest available tally. [2]

The September 14 official release recorded 693 cases across 38 counties and 133 hospitalizations. The hospitalization figure is dated to that earlier report here; it is not presented as a new September 15 measurement. Outbreak figures cannot usefully be compared without specifying their dates. [1]

Prevention and the limits of the figures

The CDC explains that measles spreads through the air and can cause pneumonia, brain inflammation and, in some cases, death. Complications are not limited to children. People without protection are at risk of infection. [3]

Two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine are about 97% effective against measles, according to the CDC. A case tally does not replace individual assessment with a health professional or by itself measure vaccine effectiveness. [3]
